Understanding normal oral anatomy will help you detect common abnormalities to look for when evaluating the oral health of puppies. Malocclusions, missing teeth and periodontal teeth will be explained along with some recommendations for new puppy owners on when to seek veterinary care and treatment.

About Dr. Christopher Smithson  

Christopher Smithson, DVM, DAVDC, is a board-certified veterinary dentist who practices at The Pet Dentist in Tampa, Florida. He graduated with honors from Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and, after seven years in general practice, completed a veterinary dentistry residency at the Center for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dr. Smithson provides specialized care in dentistry and oral surgery and has a special interest in oral oncologic surgery and endodontic disease. He is the author of many journal articles and book chapters on dentistry and oral surgery. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, canoeing, camping and spending time with his wife, Heather, also a veterinarian, and their three daughters. The family has a cat named Moby and a deaf Border Collie named Possum.
