Nobody could turn a blind eye to a white-and-liver Pointer called “Ray,” who sustained a serious injury that caused loss of vision in one eye, but adjusted to her handicap and pushed through the field trial season with grit and determination to win the 10th annual Purina Amateur Top Field Trial Bird Dog Award. S F Mapleleaf earned placements in eight amateur all-age stakes, six of which were wins, earning 1,554 points and outperforming 67 dogs under owner-handler Larry Smith of Pleasant Hill, Iowa. “Ray is a strong, consistent performer who almost always finds birds,” says Smith, a repeat Purina Award winner who owned and handled S F Bandwagon (“Joe”), the 2015-2016 Purina Amateur Top Field Trial Bird Dog. “I’m fortunate to have a dog worthy of campaigning at this level.” The 4-year-old female was bred by Doug Meyer of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and is fed Purina Pro Plan SPORT Performance 30/20 Formula.
